  • Basic Computer and Digital Literacy for Teachers

    Introduction


    Digital literacy is the capacity of an individual to find, interpret and input information on various digital devices. A digital device is any technology-enabled computing device/product ie. phones, computers, tablets etc. Digital devices are interconnected through the internet, a network via which information can be communicated. This course covers the basic skills required to navigate the internet reliably, consume information, troubleshoot problems with common devices. Comprising three modules, each module focuses on a set of skills on a given domain. Beginning with an introduction to digital literacy, the course dives right into the basics of computer and internet use for educational purposes. The final module presents a discussion on media literacy.

    Effort: This course will take approximately 10-15 hours of student effort to complete including time spent on readings and assignments.

    Course structure:

    This course is divided into the following consecutive modules:

    1. Computing for Education
    2. The Internet
    3. Media Literacy

    Course management:

    This is a self-paced course, which means the student completes the course on their own, at times that suit them. However, it is recommended that you complete the entire course within 60 days from when you start. Each module consists of information for you to read, view or listen to, to help you learn about the topic, as well as practice exercises and assignments. At the end of each module, there is a short quiz to assess your learning, and the cumulative results of these quizzes consist of your grade for the course.     Assessment

    This is a graded course where you will be required to complete exercises in each module, and one quiz per module. Your grade is based on the average grade of the three quizzes. A minimum grade of 70% is required to pass this course. You may attempt each quiz unlimited number of times. Those who receive a passing grade may be issued a certificate of completion.
